Message But first my disclaimer: I am not a professional, this if just what i have read over the years.

Basically you want to remove as much as you can from the car. Includes but not limited to fascia's, front fenders, hood, all mouldings, doors, any trim near any area being painted, headlights, taillights, turn signals, etc. For one, its less to tape off, and two, it will look much more professional. When it comes down to it, the paint jobs that look the best are the ones that pay attention to the real little details (aside from the sprayer not being an idiot and causing runs).

After its painted, there is also another step after the paint cures which is smoothing out any orange peel with red compound, then white compound, or if you really want to go all out, wetsand the clear-coat with 1000, then 1500, then 2500, then polish. That takes alot of time, and will require several clear-coat coats, but it brings the shine to like a mirror finish.

As far as sanding...all i know for fact is that you should wet-sand. Ive read some people say you should strip as much paint off as you can, and others say sand through the clear-coat, and other say strip it to the metal. Ive also read that the more coats of paint are on a body panel, the less likely the paint is to stick over time. Dont know if thats true or not, im not a specialist.
